We're This Close

Posted by Don Butler on Jan 10, 2016

In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children.  Over the past 30 years, more than 1 million Rotarians around the world have donated their time and personal resources to eradication of the Polio virus.  Today, through the efforts launched by Rotary, new cases of Polio have seen a reduction of 99.9%.  As Rotarians like to say…”We’re this close!”

The Four Way Test

Posted by Don Butler on Dec 17, 2015
The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do
  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Exchange Student Trine Ziegler arriving soon

Posted by Suzan Abrams on Jul 14, 2011

We are fortunte to have our 5th exchange student arriving on August 11th!  Trine Ziegler is from Denmark.

Trine Ziegler Nielsen is headed to Katy, Texas from Skive, Danmark (Denmark) around August.   She describes Skive as an โ€˜industrial city with lots of nice nature โ€ฆ with around 25,000 citizens. Itโ€™s not near a major city.

Her first family will be Michael & Sheila Kuhn (neighbors of Bari & Carolyn Saunders).  Jean Love has volunteered to be our 2nd host family โ€ฆ still looking for family #3.

Trine is 16 (DOB:  4/5/1995) and will be a sophomore at Taylor High School.

Each student writes a short description of their life and here are some excerpts:

After school she rides her horse, mucks out the stable for her horse and her dadโ€™s horses.  Trine has been riding since she was 2 and was a serious competition dressage rider for many years.  Another passion is  guitar (acoustic and electric) and she takes lessons on Thursday & Friday.  (We may want to see if someone has a guitar she can borrow during her stay)

Her primary language is Danish but she also speaks English and German.  She has one brother (Marinus โ€“ age 4).  She has traveled to many European cities/countries and enjoys experiencing other cultures/foods, etcโ€ฆ   (Sheโ€™ll love TEXAS!!)

If you wish to make contact with Trine you can email her at:  trineziegler@hotmail.com

Latin Julius "Julius"
Latin Julius mensis "month of Julius"

The Legend of St. Valentines Day:

The history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Snow in January
  • January's birthstone is the garnet which represents constancy.
  • Its birth flower is the cottage pink Dianthus caryophyllus or galanthus.[2]
  • The Chinese floral emblem of January is the Prunus mume.
  • The Japanese floral emblem of January is the camellia (Camellia sinensis).
  • In Finland, the month of Tammikuu means the heart of the winter and because the name also means Oak, it can be inferred that the oak tree is the heart of grand forest with many valuable trees as opposed to the typical Arctic forests which are typically pine and spruce. The photograph of a large tree covered with ice against a blue sky is a familiar scene during Finland's winter.
  • The Zodiac signs for the month of January are Capricorn (until January 19) and Aquarius (January 20 onwards).

 Facts About July :

According to the Gregorian calendar, July is the seventh month. On the Roman calendar, it was the fifth month and it was called 'Quintilis', menaing 'fifth'. Julius Ceasar gave the month 31 days in 46 B.C. The Roman Senate named it 'Julius', in honor of Caesar.

July is usually the hotest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. July is one of the winter months in the Southern Hemisphere. The climate is mild in most of the Southern Hemisphere, with the exception of the COLD Antarctica, and the cold, rainy part of South America.

During July, when there isn't much rain, the grass often loses it's greenness. Some flowers are abundant in July, because they strive on the heat. Also, insects are abundant as well - life is striving in July!

Independence Day is observed in the United States on July 4. On that day in 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. In France, a similar holiday, Bastille Day, occurs on July 14. Several other countries celebrate national independence in July. Canada celebrates July 1 as Canada Day. Independence Day is celebrated in Venezuela on July 5; in Argentina, July 9; in Belgium, July 21; and in Peru, July 28.

The Ruby is the gem for July.

The water lily is the flower for the month of July.

Facts About June

Flag Day is observed in the United States on June 14. It commemorates the day in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as our flag. It then had only 13 stars, to match its 13 stripes.

It's not an official national holiday, but in Pennsylvania, it is a legal holiday. The President has proclaimed a public flag day observance every year. It was first observed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the selection of the flag. President Harry S. Truman officially recognized June 14 as Flag Day by signing the National Flag Day Bill.

The Philippines' Independence Day is on June 12.
Sweden celebrates flag day, its national holiday, on June 6.
Finland's flag day is the Saturday closest to June 24.
The JUNE BUG also known as June beetle, is the name for several large beetles seen in the United States during May and June. They are usually seen at night, when the light attracts them.

June bugs eat the young leaves of trees and plants. They deposit their eggs in the ground. The young larvae bury themselves in the soil in the autumn and stay there two years. They then come out in May or June as adult beetles.

FEBRUARY FACTS :

February is the second month, and has 28 days, except on Leap Years when it has 29 (2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012).

It is named after the Roman god Februus.  The Latin root word februa means purification; and the Romans held their celebration of purification during the time of the month February. The Welsh originally called the second month of the year โ€“ โ€œy mis bachโ€ meaning the little month. During the time of Shakespeare it was called โ€˜Feverellโ€™.

The flower of this month is a violet or sometimes a primrose and the birthstone is amethyst (which represents sincerity).

Three big holidays are held in February: Groundhogโ€™s day (2nd), St. Valentineโ€™s Day (14th) and Presidentโ€™s day (3rd Monday).

Assistant Governor Jean Love presents her 'Theme Talk'

Posted by Suzan Abrams

RCKS is fortunate to have Jean Love once again as our Assistant Governor.   Jean presented the 2011-2012 Theme Reach Within To Embrace Humanity.

She mentioned that our Adoption Fairs are ways our club embraces humanity - even the children that were not adopted benefitted from the acts of kindness shown to them during this event.

She encouraged us to perform 'Random Acts of Kindness' and remember that sometimes it's the person we know that needs our support.  Make a call to check up on someone you've not seen in awhile.

On January 12, 2010 several Rotarians from our district landed at the airport in Haiti. They were part of a team working on a clean water and reforestation project.  One Rotarian's suitcase was delayed so they had to wait in the airport for an extended amount of time.  Because of this delay they were on the road at the time the earthquake occured.  If not for the delay they would have been crushed because the building they were headed to was destroyed.  The group instantly began to help where they could.  In many cases the only help they could give was to hold a hand and pray.  This group understands first-hand about Reaching Within to Embrace Humanity.

Our club will be challenged during 2011-2012 to make a difference by Reaching Within to Embrace Humanity!

July 12th speaker: Katy Chamber of Commerce President Ann Hodge

Posted by Suzan Abrams

Honorary member of Katy Sunrise Rotary Club and Katy Chamber President Ann Hodge was our guest speaker on July 12, 2011.  We all know the Katy area has grown over the past 10 years but Ann was able to give actual numbers.  In 1990 Katy* had 82,000 homes and the projection was that by 2010 there would be 244,000 homes.  In reality, there were 256,000 homes at the end of 2010 and by 2015 the projection is 342,000.

The Katy area currently has 6,600 business and with the new hospials this number will more than likely increase.  Ann Hodge and her staff at the Katy Chamber of Commerce not only work with new residents and businesses but they organize an annual trip to Austin to meet with those elected officials representing the Katy area.

Why have we had such tremendous growth?

Ann stated many families move to Katy for our schools!

In my opinion another reason is people like Ann Hodge who work tirelessly to promote Katy as a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family!

Since the Pippitts have committed to the children the whole town has become involved and their are now plans to build a new school and safe house for the children and orphans of the village.
