The Legend of St. Valentines Day:
The history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

In Finland, the month of Tammikuu means the heart of the winter and because the name also means Oak, it can be inferred that the oak tree is the heart of grand forest with many valuable trees as opposed to the typical Arctic forests which are typically pine and spruce. The photograph of a large tree covered with ice against a blue sky is a familiar scene during Finland's winter.
The Zodiac signs for the month of January are Capricorn (until January 19) and Aquarius (January 20 onwards).

According to the Georgian calendar, September is the ninth month. But, on the Roman calendar, it was the seventh month. September has had 29 days, and 31 days; but, since the time of the emperor Augustus, it has had only 30 days.
September is one of the warmest months in the Southern United States. Northern states have warm September days, but the nights get much cooler. It is also harvest time for crops. And, in Switzerland, it's called Harvest Month.

Facts About June
Flag Day is observed in the United States on June 14. It commemorates the day in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as our flag. It then had only 13 stars, to match its 13 stripes.
It's not an official national holiday, but in Pennsylvania, it is a legal holiday. The President has proclaimed a public flag day observance every year. It was first observed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the selection of the flag. President Harry S. Truman officially recognized June 14 as Flag Day by signing the National Flag Day Bill.
Sweden celebrates flag day, its national holiday, on June 6.
Finland's flag day is the Saturday closest to June 24.
The JUNE BUG also known as June beetle, is the name for several large beetles seen in the United States during May and June. They are usually seen at night, when the light attracts them.
June bugs eat the young leaves of trees and plants. They deposit their eggs in the ground. The young larvae bury themselves in the soil in the autumn and stay there two years. They then come out in May or June as adult beetles.

February is the second month, and has 28 days, except on Leap Years when it has 29 (2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012).
It is named after the Roman god Februus. The Latin root word februa
means purification; and the Romans held their celebration of
purification during the time of the month February. The Welsh originally
called the second month of the year โ โy mis bachโ meaning the little
month. During the time of Shakespeare it was called โFeverellโ.
The flower of this month is a violet or sometimes a primrose and the birthstone is amethyst (which represents sincerity).
Three big holidays are held in February: Groundhogโs day (2nd), St. Valentineโs Day (14th) and Presidentโs day (3rd Monday).
President Carl is hosting this event and has invited our 'sister club' Katy Rotary. The event will feature 'flour bombing' and other fun activities. Rotarians should bring their family (that means kids too), friends and prospective Rotarians.
RCKS is fortunate to have Jean Love once again as our Assistant Governor. Jean presented the 2011-2012 Theme Reach Within To Embrace Humanity.
She mentioned that our Adoption Fairs are ways our club embraces humanity - even the children that were not adopted benefitted from the acts of kindness shown to them during this event.
She encouraged us to perform 'Random Acts of Kindness' and remember that sometimes it's the person we know that needs our support. Make a call to check up on someone you've not seen in awhile.
On January 12, 2010 several Rotarians from our district landed at the airport in Haiti. They were part of a team working on a clean water and reforestation project. One Rotarian's suitcase was delayed so they had to wait in the airport for an extended amount of time. Because of this delay they were on the road at the time the earthquake occured. If not for the delay they would have been crushed because the building they were headed to was destroyed. The group instantly began to help where they could. In many cases the only help they could give was to hold a hand and pray. This group understands first-hand about Reaching Within to Embrace Humanity.
Our club will be challenged during 2011-2012 to make a difference by Reaching Within to Embrace Humanity!
Assistant Governor Jean Love presents her 'Theme Talk'
Honorary member of Katy Sunrise Rotary Club and Katy Chamber President Ann Hodge was our guest speaker on July 12, 2011. We all know the Katy area has grown over the past 10 years but Ann was able to give actual numbers. In 1990 Katy* had 82,000 homes and the projection was that by 2010 there would be 244,000 homes. In reality, there were 256,000 homes at the end of 2010 and by 2015 the projection is 342,000.
The Katy area currently has 6,600 business and with the new hospials this number will more than likely increase. Ann Hodge and her staff at the Katy Chamber of Commerce not only work with new residents and businesses but they organize an annual trip to Austin to meet with those elected officials representing the Katy area.
Why have we had such tremendous growth?
Ann stated many families move to Katy for our schools!
In my opinion another reason is people like Ann Hodge who work tirelessly to promote Katy as a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family!
July 12th speaker: Katy Chamber of Commerce President Ann Hodge
